Knowledge

Card Sorting
In the card sorting method of UX research, participants arrange the individual labels written on notecards into groups based on standards that make sense to them.

Fig 1.1 Card Sorting from Medium

Card Sorting can be conducted in two different ways:

Closed Card Sorting: Determine the main categories before the test, and the participants have to assign the cards to those predefined groups.

Open Card Sorting: Group the cards, but can create and name the categories. (fewer restrictions)

User Journey Map
A journey map is a document used for user experience visualisation that outlines the steps a user takes to complete a task. User and stakeholder interviews provide the data used to create personas. These activities allow you to pinpoint the most crucial functionality that your audience requires.

User Flow
User Flow is the path taken by a prototypical user on a website or app to complete a task.

Fig 2.3 Example from Career Foundry

One of the reason why we are using user flow in our project because it is used to evaluate existing interface. User flow charts make it easier to identify what's working, what isn't, and what needs to be improved. Understanding the potential causes of user stalls and potential solutions is helpful.

Low-fidelity prototype
A straightforward approach for converting abstract design ideas into real-world objects that can be tested. Lo-fi prototypes' primary and most crucial function is to test and verify functionality, not the product's aesthetic appeal. (Adobe)

Floating Action Button (FAB)
FAB performs the primary, or most common, action on a screen. It appears in front of all screen content, typically as a circular shape with an icon in its center. FABs come in three types: regular, mini, and extended. (Material Design)

Lectures

Week 3

Project 1: Mobile Application Proposal

Brainstorming
We are informed our first week has no class, only thing to do is do some research on any app that you feel needs to be improved. List out the subject needs to be improved with poor UI design, and bad user experience as a simple report using Google Slides.

I try to rewind my memories to bad design apps that I have used before, I choose the option to rewind because there will be judgement there when you taking a purpose to review an apps. Current choices allow me to take the user's point of view rather than the designer's. EUP-GPS (Malaysia) is a Taylor's Shuttle Bus Trackers app which I have downloaded once when I'm in foundation at Taylors. I having a bad experience because the bus only provide their current location only with car plates,  but as user, I don't know which bus is the route I looking for. So, I have uninstalled.

In the step of analysis, there are also some mistake have been made as designer point of view, simplicity. There are too many touchpoint that bring unnecessary step to the users. This app is quite simple, so it is crucial to deliver the user need.

After I presented my idea to Mr Shamsul, he approved my idea.

Proposal

Fig 3.1 Outline of Proposal

According to the outline, I have finished half of the slides in Week 3. Basically is describing the current selected apps with some intro about the background and context and the improvement can be made based on user needs. I stopped at User Demographics part then asked feedback from Mr. Shamsul on my current progression. Mr Shamsul suggest that I can narrow the user demographics only to Taylor's University students because I have seen some elders that not from the University have taken the Shuttle bus, but they are the minorities, we should focus on the majority. Therefore, the user demographics and user research can be analysis according  courses and nationality.

In the user testing and validation planning,  Murphy. (2018, March 7) propose a flow of user testing, included 5 steps, research, design, prototype, build and test. Usability testing takes place after the prototype phase and during the testing phase. However, the outcome of this project is prototype, so the user testing plan in this project only applied until prototyping stage with usability test.

Feedback

Week 2
Specific Feedback: The icon should shown in bus icon. Maybe can minimize the status of the bus to three, such as normal, overspeeding and no signal. The idea is approved proceed to next stage, documentation for proposal.

Week 3
The survey question can be focus on Taylor's University Students. The user demographics in user research can be based on courses and nationality. Describe how the user research be taken but not designing the question yet, that is in the next project.

Week 4
Cite the reference into slides. Two sources recommend:
  1. Nielsen Norman
  2. Usability.gov
There will be two type of prototype: Low-fidelity and High-fidelity prototypes. The user testing will take place after every prototype.
