Project 1: Proposal Research Task

Instructions:
Working as a group, determine a cultural driven basic assumptions or artifacts and products for your artwork project’s topic. Refer to the breakdown or expansion of the Design System to study your chosen topic or artifacts.

Compile your findings in a presentation deck along with the 200 words rationale and minimum 3 sketches of project artwork for your proposal.

1. Brainstorming
As a group. we have brainstorm the cultures in Japan as much as we can and listed it down in google doc.

After a group meeting discussion, 2 topic have been selected as our research direction:

    a. Japanese Luck and Fortune in Gachapon Culture
    b. Japanese Summer Festival Clothing Culture

Task Distribution has been given by spin the wheel, I'm not that lucky to get the research topic I interested. The research topic I have been focus on is Summer Festival Culture. Although I'm not interested at first, I still feel excited when did more research because I like tradition culture. I also have do some research on Luck and Fortune culture such as senbazuru and kit kat.  As it happens, Pavilion Bukit Jalil has decorations, stores and arts about Japan. i have take a few photo on the display yukata and found that most of the research are relatable except the way of tie the obi.

Research on Japanese Luck and Fortune in Gachapon Culture:

Research on Japanese Summer Festival Clothing Culture:

Feedback from Ms Anis:
Explore on the value of gachapon for anticipation with the practice of dispensing fortune and luck. Start figuring out ways to gather data and which info would best help you create your project to be more interesting. How about focussing on life as a student? What kind of fortune and luck do you guys think would help you feel better in your studies?

We have arrange all those research and ideation into Google Slide for presentation purpose and follow Ms Anis feedback as reference. All of us also presented well on 2/2/2023 (presentation day), we do practice and keep rehearsal before entering the classroom and present.

Feedback:
  • concerns with physical gashapon prototype due to time constraint, suggests to focus more on digital approaches
  • suggested mechanisms: shaking in apps/games
  • can focus on translating the thrill of drawing a gashapon on screen
  • suggests to document our feelings & experiences of drawing gashapon during data collection in Japan

Project 2: Data Collection

So, according to our research direction, our group have planned out a several place to visit in Japan for data collection. Before visiting Japan, Sir and Ms Anis prepare much information and advice on things to be noticed in Japan. it is really useful for the first visit a cold country person like me.

After a short and sweet study journey, our group have started to write observational studies on the data we have collected. The tasks are distributed according who have more experience on. We all also have uploaded our data accordingly in drive.

Observational Studies on Gashapon.

Observational Studies on Other Lucky Object:

Feedback from Ms Anis:
  • think hard about the rationale when writing descriptions for data collection!
  • translate your experience, thrill & excitement into the prototype
  • think about the feelings you want your prototype to evoke in others

Again, we have rearrange those observational studies into our slides.

Project 3: Final Prototype

Before we started, we have created a moodboard on Pinterest as a visual reference for our prototype. Then, we begin to illustrate our prototype.

My first illustration is the accessories on the Maneki Neko.

The second would be the goldfish. the goldfish tail is too long and big. I have to resize and resize until it looks fit on the Luckymiao head.

Figure 4.3 Cute Goldfish in AI

The hardest illustration for me. Because of it, I missed up the due date to submit this illustration. Why it is hard? The crossing part between white and blue curves are hard to become smooth. The next definitely would be the fish scale, pick the wrong colour scheme on it, how to make the masking traces not that obvious....

Then, it come to animation. Every part of the animation have to be separate such as background, turning the gacha, the content pop out, omikuji and so on. My part would be turning the gacha, different colours of gacha animation are render out to make sure the randomation. Due to I have different laptop performance from others, I couldn't directly export the gif out from the ae. I have to export as mov then import to Photoshop for gif version.

If you have pay much attention on Luckymiao whisk, you will find out the whisk will only move when turning the gacha. This is a point I added myself, I wanted to show that Luckymiao only come to life when they are spinning gachapon.

Due to some technical problem, I have exported the mov with animated background.

My teammates really pro, we managed to produced the website before the prototype presentation day (1/3/2023). However, I get dengue fever on 28/2/2023 so I attend it online through microsoft team on the presentation day.

Feedback from both lectures:
  • The website is very good, if can add a branding/landing page with our concept description will be better
  • The A1 size poster have increase the picture size
According to the feedback, me and my teammate work together for a simple infographics to put in to the branding /landing page. I feel sorry and thankful to my teammates who really consider my body condition and gave me the lightest job on this part and let me rest. Because of dengue fever, I really can't focus much with the bad body condition. (even covid I didn't suffer that much pain). My teammates really nice. The colour scheme on the background is according to our website main theme background.
