Week 9 / Digital Surrealism
The concept of Realism and Surrealism
1. Realism
Takes topics from the everyday, everyday world that we refer to as "reality." It typically uses a mundane, unremarkable subject matter and theme. Thinking outside the box is not necessary because it is not "real."
2. Surrealism.
A variation on realism It examines the subconscious mind, focuses on dream-images, and frequently seeks to distort what is commonplace and what we refer to as reality.
A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.
Week 10 / Intro to After Effects
It is a software design for animation, visual effects and motion picture compositing. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.
All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator. After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.
Instruction
1. After Effects Exercise
a. Download the PSD composition.
c. Create a composition setting 1080 px (Width) x 1920 px (Height), Duration 15 second
d. Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position (P), Scale (S) & Masking path.
e. Render output: Quicktime (.MOV) or .MP4
f. Upload your exercise into your Youtube Channel.
g. Update your progress and video to your E-Portfolio blog.
2. Project 4: Self Titled [30%]
Requirement:
Output: .MOV or .MP4 less than 20MB
Size: 1080 x 1920 px (I.G reel/ story size)
Part 1: Idea Development
b. Statement about the work
c. 3 Mood Board (reference)
Part 2: Design Direction
b. Create 2 digital posters for your work.
Part 3: Execution and Post Production
b. Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
After Effect Exercise:
A new composition of 1080px width x 1920px height is created with 15s duration. Then, create 6 new folders and rename it to organize it. Import the downloaded psd into the After Effect and place the composition file to precomp folder and layers file to psd folder.
I have used the example given by Mr. Fauzi as reference to make the animation. The scale transform is applied to the the projector, the position transform are applied to the typewriter, shark and the fencer, the rotation is applied to the fencer and the typewriter. Only the fencer is remain still. I have found it an easy way to alter the transformation. After adding the keyframe, double click the keyframe dot and key in the value to make adjustment. However, this way suitable for most of the keyframe except position transformation. The rotation of the typewriter is 15 degree clockwise and anticlockwise. The rotation of fencer are 5 degree clockwise and -3 anticlockwise. I have also add the opacity to the projector to make it feel like the projector is functioning. The opacity is reduce to 85%

Figure 1.4 Masking on Fencer
Figure 1.5 Orientation
The mask is apply to the fencer by creating the new mask then create two keyframe in the path of the mask. Move the mask below the composition at the first keyframe, remain the same position of the fencer at the second keyframe. I noticed the example given by Mr. Fauzi have the orientation transformation layer, but in my after effect the orientation cannot be apply in the composition.

Figure 1.8 Null Object with parenting
Figure 1.9 Enables motion blur to all layers
After finishing all keyframe transformation, the null object effect is applied and make it parenting. This steps will make the whole composition have the keyframe transformation together. I applied it at the beginning to bring out the composition of earth quake then everything falls out. The speed of the movement can be alter by using the ease and ease function, then the graphic editor. Narrow the curve will speed up while widen the curve will slow down the speed. The motion blur is make the movement more fluent, thus I applied it to all layers. Finally, come to the last step. The export part. I exported in H264 format and uploaded to the YouTube.

a. Biography about yourself
Hi, I’m Yan Ling. I came from Kedah which famous in paddy in Malaysia. Bachelor In Design (Hons) of Creative Media is the degree course currently studying at Taylor’s University. My choice to study this subject was driven by interest, of course, but also because I wanted to challenge myself. I had never been exposed to any drawing or design, and even not doing well in design homework as a child. I appreciate good design and good work, but I don't want to stop at just admiring, but also want to express my creative ability. In high school, I’m a secretary of Chinese Orchestra which gives me the opportunity to gain experiences. I have learned the value of hard work, efficiency, and responsibility. I had played piano when I was young, I would like to continue my music journey when I can afford a piano from my own. My hobbies are spends my spare time listen songs, play games and daydream. In the future, I hope I live in a small house in a country that have winter season so I could celebrate my favourite festival, Christmas and play music whole day!
I would like to express the theme of daydream with the festival I like and play music. In my 20 years of life, I always excited to celebrate festivals. My favorite festival is Christmas because I have been celebrating it with my family since I was small, even though we are not Christian. The new year and the Chinese New Year also come with it, and smiles spread on people's faces. Thus, the first idea would be the countdown of festival and the next one would be the daydream with the future I hope. When the times up, the firework will boom out as all we see when a festival is coming up. The smoke is escaping out from my brain which is play music that break through my mind to make the circles moving on which represent my life. The overall atmosphere of the design I wanted to bring out will be happy, because it's a celebration and it's something I love. So the overall color will be light and bright.

Snow layer steps in Photoshop:
1. Create an rectangle within the size and fill with black colour.
2. Add 100% Gaussian noise and open the monochromatic.
3. Add 3 radius pixels of Gaussian blur.
4. In image > adjustment > Threshold > 110 Threshold Level.
5. Change the blending mode of this layer to lighten.
Technique used:
1. Masking (Cut out the images without background)
2. Adjustment Layers
3. Advance recoloring
4. Digital Imaging (matching the colour of different layers)
5. Brushing (the snow smoke)

Title: Daydreaming
Artist Statement:
The two spinning balls one represents the sunrise and the other the sunset. For me, the day time passes slowly and the night time passes quickly. But it doesn't stop me from daydreaming. Daydreaming is actually my ideal state of life for the future. On my favorite holiday, playing the piano in the warmth of my own cottage, the sound of the piano slowly drifting out with the smoke from my house, filling my head. The sound of piano and smoke smashed a small hole in my head and drifted into my real life. The snowman dancing happily with music and snowing.
Part 3: Execution and Post Production
a. Imported Final Poster to After Effects
b. Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design

Snow layer steps in After Effect:
1. Create new black solid layer by right click in timeline and rename the solid layer to Snow.
2. Add "cc particle world" effect and turn off the grid & guides in effect control.
3. Increase the birth rate to 10 to show the effect more obviously.
4. Adjust the radius of x, y and z in producer to spread the snow evenly and depth in the composition.
5. Change the physics of the particle by make changes on the velocity and resistance to the speed of the particles you want.
6. Change gravity vector to alter the direction of the particles.
7. Change the particle type to faded sphere, and change the value, colour of birth and death size and the size variation and opacity of them.
8. Decrease the birth rate to 2.0s and increase the longevity to 2.9s.
