Lectures

Week 1 / Introduction of Adobe Illustrator
Since our first week of classes fell on the Malaysian National Day public holiday, we meet Mr. Hafiz on prerecorded lecture. He introduce about the difference between CMYK and RGB and teaches us basic function with shortcut key step by step to create shape. We apply the knowledge that we learn and create a picture with topic of lemon. Mr. Hafiz also give advice to us, the way of create or illustrate things on Photoshop/ Illustrator is not fixed, but the knowledge does such Golden Ratio. There are several resources about Adobe Illustrator uploaded by Mr. Hafiz on Google Classroom for our further study. Our tutorials are assigned to boost our skills with those resources.

Week 2 / Sketching and Tracing
Mr. Hafiz make small recap of basic function and use of Adobe Illustrator. I used this small period of time to make an another illustrate of lemon. Due to the limitation of time and lack of the knowledge of design principles (still learning), there still have a big improvement can be made on the composition.  For this class main lesson, we learn to tracing and built shape with two methods. First is is use the pen tool directly illustrate then reshape ; Second is use the curve pen tool and reshape. Both method is useful, just depend which one you more comfortable with.

Week 3 / Blending mode and pathfinder
This week we have been teach to use the fundamental of blender and pathfinder. The color can be blend or mix through the transparency function in Adobe Illustrator. Transparency defines the blending mode and opacity of objects in order to create opacity masks or to knock out a portion of one object with the portion of a transparent object overlying it. There are multiples selection in transparency such as darken, multiply and etc. Everything is white or closer to white in darken, multiply and color burn mode will change the value of value become transparent while black still remain; Black become transparent in lighten, screen, color dodge mode; Gray become transparent in overlay, soft light and hard light mode.

Figure 3.1 Transparency in white, black and grey.

There are 4 types of shaper mode and 6 type of path finder.
  • Unite combine the area of the component to the underlying geometry.
  • Minus front cuts out the area of the component from the underlying geometry on the front.
  • Intersect uses the area of the component to clip the underlying geometry as a mask would.
  • Exclude Overlapping uses the area of the component to invert the underlying geometry, turning filled regions into holes and vice versa.
Divide separates a piece of artwork into its component-filled faces (a face is an area undivided by a line segment). Trim removes the part of a filled object that is hidden and any strokes but doesn't merge objects of the same color. Merge also removes the part of a filled object that is hidden and any strokes but merges any adjoining or overlapping objects filled with the same color. Crop divides artwork into its component-filled faces, and then deletes all the parts of the artwork that fall outside the boundary of the topmost object. It also removes any strokes. Outline divides an object into its component line segments, or edges. This command is useful for preparing artwork that needs a trap for overprinting objects.  Last, Minus Back - cuts the objects in back from the frontmost object.

The shape can be reflect horizontally or vertically by clicking the shapes with option key(mac) or Alt(PC). Mr. Hafiz also taught us how to use the rotate tool, just click the rotate tool in tool box then set the angle and click the copy button it will produce a copy which rotate in the angle you want. Additionally, Ms. Anis have a short briefing on our 1st project, Digital Triptych and the lecture, Character Design.

Task: Vormator Challenge

Vormator is the ultimate test of your creativity, requiring you to create a stunning piece with limited resources. Everyone will receive the same set of the shape. With these shapes, you are challenged to create your own unique design while adhering to the constraints outlined in the Rulebook. Designers are thus challenged to create a one-of-a-kind piece while adhering to a strict set of guidelines. In this project, it all comes down to pure talent and creativity.

Week 2
The elements we sketch to build a character are assigned as our first task. It must be black and white, shrinking and resizing are permitted, and the due date is Week 4 (21/9/2022). Before we built the design, we have to learn the different shape will bring different characteristic. Mostly, triangle is for bad guys, round will have a friendly or cute characteristic, square has a personality of stable can be trusted  and so on.
Figure 1.1 Three Main Shape of Character Design

Honestly, I have no idea on designing character so I just play around the element and make some different composition then produce out 3 different character. The first character is designed because I'm really angry on the Wi-Fi connection and assuming a bad guy control the connection. The character on the left totally is my appearance when out of idea and connection. The other 2 design is created with the same main element with different other composition. The second sketch design stands out since it appears more playful and more potential.

WEEK 3
By using the blender and pathfinder tools, we started to apply colors to our character. I add some decorations with element given on the background of the 2nd design to show where the character lives. It was a difficult task to choose the main color of the character, which would determine his personality. I finally chose white, as a positive character his personalities is unknown and infinite possibilities. The vormator challenge exercise is submitted on the 18/9/2022.

Week 4
By using the blender and pathfinder tools, we started to apply colors to our character. I add some decorations with element given on the background of the 2nd design to show where the character lives. It was a difficult task to choose
