Project 1: Self Portrait
Briefing & Recap
Create a self portrait about ourselves that contemplate on your life experiences, which includes your culture, your family, your friends, your schooldays, your favourite hangouts, your favourite music, food, musician, etc. Observe your surroundings –people, vehicles, buildings, plants, signages, nature, and activities. Record these in sketches, photography and/or video recording. A self-portrait is an illustration of oneself that illustrate by them. It can be a drawing of your physical appearance or not, but it have to be reflect about yourself. Thus, mindmaps are used to explore ideas and as a medium to get to know yourself better.
I have ask myself with several question. First, obviously is who am I? Then, it comes to my personalities with the MBTI test, hobbies, favorites thing and so on. I updated my mindmap to have organized look and detail some explanation after receiving general feedback from Ms. Yip to all students.

I picked 4 parts of myself, favourite movie (Studio Ghibli), characteristic (INFJ, recharging), favourite civilization and what I love (nature and animals) demonstrate out 4 ideas.
Idea 1
The first idea refer to the scene (Fig 2.4) and the Kodama (Fig 2.3) in Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle (Fig2.2). Thus, the colour scheme for this idea will be analogous. The cave is surround by trees root and I am sitting on the floor with a sleeping rabbit in the night. The cave is brighten by glowing stars. I do some research to have a clearer sketch of the idea about posture rabbits and so on.

Idea 2The second idea want to represent the way I communicate to other, careful. This idea style is refer to "The Wind Rises" (Fig 2.1), the way it shows harmonious. I was lost in the forest with a nice weather. I escaped out from a forest to prairie and met a big cute bear. He stood up and held out his bear paw to me and I carefully held out my hands too. Same as idea 1, I use some reference to draw out a better sketch.

Idea 3The third idea is showing I am freeze at the corner after an exhausted party or meeting because out of power and not recharge in time so a big wires is on my hand. I sketched the idea at the back of a magazine when I was waiting my food. This idea is refer to Fig 2.5 and Fig 2.6 which shows the loneliness.

Idea 4
The 4th idea is showing I am falling into the tomb of Queen Nefertari. The lantern lightens the tomb and the eyes on the wall is staring at me. This idea is somekind of falling in love but in a scary way that inspired by Fig 2.7. However, I don't really want to take this idea as a self portrait because it was too detail and complicated. I do love this idea, maybe I will try to finish it one day.

Progression
I decided to develop idea 2. Everything fine at first until I started to draw grass, I stuck on it for a long day because didn't find a suite brush on procreate. I make a try on the brush that have on the apps, it give a fluffy texture which looks like my style. Cute style. Then, it comes to the bear shadow, it seems a bit weird but the head of the bear is a signature of the bear not because of the light. Maybe the bear can make closer to the girl. I'm not good at drawing person, those I did some sketch on the appearance and posture.

The dress in sketch 5 is more vintage while the clothes in sketch 6 is a combination of modern collage and vintage style. I selected the clothes and did a detail sketch of the head in sketch 7, I will did more research on how to draw a head. For me, if i was curious or scared, my hand will be clenched in a fist on my chest until I relax. Thus, I implement it into my work.

Feedback
Overall is good, but the balance could be done better such as the clothes can be big and add top of the right can add elements to balance because the the size of bear is huge.
With the feedback given, the birds is added and the vintage dress is selected. However, I keep the length of the dress until the knee to make it not too formal but a bit delight. Figure 8 posture is selected too, because people normally will in the alert state when they no idea what will going on next and prepare to escape. The face should be more detail, eyes and eyebrows always bring the emotion. I sketch the eyes larger, upwards eyebrow and mouth slightly open that signify the curiosity and carefulness. There are some small challenge when I try to draw the mouth, because when the lips are added, it looks weird. So, just use an open corner to represent the mouth.

| Figure 4.20 Progression 2 |
On Fig 4.20, the overall composition is done which the position of bear is move closer to the center for balance. Thus, I sent the Fig 4.20 to Miss Yip for further improvement.
Feedback:
So far it looks good but I think you should add in more liveliness to the girl because it is you. Just a hint of colorfulness to her dress will help. Doesn't have to be stark colour but have some variation of colour.
Actually, I got it, but... several option are considered, rainbow dress? no, it wont be harmony anymore. Maybe patterns would help, the result still unsatisfied. I like how the yellow and pink colour works together and I keep the pink colour of the entire dress. Yes, I'm satisfied with result, and it will be the final self-portrait.

Rational:I was lost in the forest with a nice weather. The sun playing hide and seek with the clouds. After going round and round in the forest, I escaped out to a wide prairie. I can smell the freshness in the air. Finally, I see the sky clearly with birds flying freely. Suddenly, I saw a big brown thing moving. Ohh, it is a cute bear. It walk closer to me and stood up. It staring me a few seconds and held out his friendly bear paw to me. I walk to it closer and carefully held out my hands too. Actually, I'm ambivert but more towards to introvert, bear is represent when I met someone new, I always be carefully with my words and behavior.
Reflection:
This project really takes me to the another level on drawing, I didn't know I can draw something like this in one day. I enjoy the progress of researching, drawing, and redrawing then finalize. I finally can express my idea or emotion through drawing or design. Instead of saying the draw is create by accident, the draw is create with several basic. For instance, my self-portrait have harmony in colour, balance in composition and movement with flow, the shape of bear , dress clouds and ways to draw. All of these need practice and practical exercise. There still some improvement needed on light and shadow, I still cannot catch how it works.
